Quick Tip: How To Create an Automated Welcome Message in Mailchimp

Email marketing remains one of the most powerful methods of creating a dedicated following and seeing success with selling your products or services. Don’t listen to the people who say email is dead. Maybe it’s not the new hotness anymore, but it’s more alive than ever.

And it’s not going anywhere.

With email, you have a direct line to people’s eyeballs. Your message isn’t going to get disappeared by any sort of algorithm because you don’t have enough followers or whatever. Your emails appear in someone’s inbox the same as anyone else’s emails.

It’s the great equalizer!

But why go through the trouble of writing and sending out individual emails whenever someone signs up to your email list? That could become a full time job in itself.

Thankfully, all good email marketing services offer a way to automate sending certain emails. Let’s talk about doing that in Mailchimp.

Sending an email to someone when they sign up for your email list is a great way to give them free opt-in gifts, let them know what they can expect from your future messages, and increase your quality engagement with them. It’s always worth it to follow up with your new fans.

So how do you do it in Mailchimp? All it takes is a few easy steps.

1. Create a new automated email

We’ll do this by clicking Automate in the header of your Mailchimp dashboard. Follow that up by clicking Email. You’ll be given several automated email options. Let’s keep it easy by choosing the “Welcome new subscribers” option.

Name your new email campaign. Don’t fret about this too much; just make it something you’ll recognize in the future.

2. Fine tune your settings

You’ll land on a screen with a few different things to customize: Sends to, From, Subject, and Content. We’re going to check on each of these.

In the Sends to field, you can choose when new subscribers should be sent this welcome email. I’ve got mine set to Immediately, but you choose whatever works for you.

In the From field, you can set how you’ll be identified in your recipient’s inboxes. I’ve got mine set to my name and my email address to keep things personal.

In the Subject field, you can write out your email subject and the preview text that people will see when they receive the email. This, again, is up to your choosing.

3. Customize your email’s content

The Content field should get most of your attention. Here’s where we’ll update everything with our welcome email text and include any freebies we want to give away.

As you can see, I’ve written several paragraphs telling new subscribers who I am, giving them a link to download my free Dandy Resource Library, what they can expect from me, and when I’ll be communicating with them. I’ve made sure to make this email sound both welcoming and conversational.

When everything is to your liking and you’ve previewed the email by clicking on Preview and Test, click on Save And Continue in the lower right corner of the window.

You’ll be brought back to the previous fields window. Click on the Start Sending button under the header and Start Now in the confirmation window.

You’ve now got a really powerful and time-saving automated email going in Mailchimp. All it took was just a few easy steps to get there, too.
